Below is a history of the Evans Mills Fire Department taken from the 1958 yearbook of the Evans Mills High School:

Our Fire Department

In the summer of 1922, twenty-five men in Evans Mills met in the Charles Favret barn in Peck Street where Roland Hutton's residence now stands. The group met to organize a fire department. They elected Fred Corey as chief, Clarence Hawn as president, and Fred Panchou as secretary. They named the department the Ever-Ready Fire Department, They also named Harvey Haas and J.P. Lortscher as trustees. In September of 1924, they approved a set of bylaws and the village bought a two-wheel chemical cart with 150 feet of hose. The village, also, at this time purchased the hall next to the LeRay Hotel and remodeled the first floor to house the equipment.

In 1928, the village purchased a Sanford firetruck with a 750-gallon pump. The department continued to use this and in 1935 the firemen bought a Lincoln chassis and afterwards, a pump and booster tank were mounted on it.  In 1937, the department purchased another Lincoln to replace the old one. This truck was used until 1940 when it was wrecked on the way to a fire. The village then bought, in 1941, a Chevrolet truck with a 300-gallon tank and a 5OO-gallcn front-mounted pump salvaged from the Lincoln. About 1950 a truck was purchased by the village.  A 1000-gallon tank was mounted on this truck to use for rural calls.

On August 16, 1950, the department purchased an ambulance.  Soon after, a resuscitator was purchased and placed in this ambulance. In I954, the department sold it and bought a new Chevrolet fully equipped ambulance. It is still in use. In 1957, the village bought a new fire truck to replace the 1914 Chevrolet. This truck is complete with ladders and a 750-gallon pump and 500-gallon water storage.

The department today numbers 35 men, on call day or night. In 1957, uniforms were purchased for each man for use in parades, During the past 36 years, the chiefs have Included Fred Corey, Howard Kissel, Floyd Ball, Vilas Lingenfelter, Joseph Locksmith, Harold Corey, Kenneth Sixbury, In January, Ralph Kissel was elected as chief for 1958, Of the original charter members, three are still living--

Fred Lingenfelter, William Palmer, and Floyd Ball. The annual program of the department includes at least one supper and a frolic night or field day.

As we look back over the years and see how the department has advanced and what the village board has done, it is fitting and proper at this time to thank each and every citizen in this village of Evans Mills and surrounding territory for what they have done to make this department with the equipment it has today- one of the outstanding departments, for the size of the village, in Jefferson County.

The slate of officers in 1957:

Ralph Kissell, First Assistant Chief
Vilas Lingenfelter, Third Assistant Chief
Garrett West, Treasurer
Joseph Rommelman, Custodian
Fredrick Brand, Secretary
